"The Long Ride"

Bruce Friedrich is a California artist who has worked in wood for over
26 years. Bruce is also an avid bicycle tourist. This work was
inspired by a 3,500 mile bicycle trip Bruce made across the USA in
1996. The model for this sculpture is Mr.
Friederich's own Specialized Allez SE road bike.
Built over a period exceeding nine hundred hours in 2000, the bicycle
is crafted entirely from wood. Most components function, and there are
over four hundred pieces in the working chain alone!
This artwork won First Place, the Creativity Award and Best of Show in
the handcraft category at the 2000 California State Fair as well as
numerous other awards.
Varieties of wood used include:
Tires = wenge
Chain, chain rings, rear cluster, derailleur cages, stem, fork crown, rims = aviation plywood
Frame = purpleheart and maple
Handlebars & shifters = Gabon ebony
Seat = Gabon ebony and maple
Spokes = 1/8" dowels
Cables = rattan caning
